Maui Part II | Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a slow, windy road that skirts the outside edge of the east side of Maui. This part of the island is incredibly beautiful and has so many cool things to see all relatively close to one another. We left our Airbnb at about 7am and didn’t get back until about 10pm. We didn’t even put a dent in how many places we could have stopped, but I’ll share the things we did do/see.

I have to mention that since I knew there was going to be a lot of curvy roads, and I get car sick so easily, I took two dramamine pills. I was happy that I didn’t get car sick at all (!!!!!), but I was SO tired. I fell asleep between just about every stop. I was frustrated at the time, but it was also kinda funny. I learned my lesson and from now on I’m only going to take one pill when needed. Here we go…

Mile Marker 2: Twin Falls

At this stop there are two waterfalls; one flowing into another. Unfortunately, the top waterfall was blocked off when we went so we only got to see the bottom one.

Mile Marker 6.5: Bamboo Forest

Bamboo is loud! At times it sounded like a thousand people were opening a thousand squeaky doors at the same time.

Mile Marker 10.5: Garden of Eden Arboretum/Coconuts Food Truck

We didn’t end up going into the Garden of Eden Arboretum mostly because we were short on time. We really wanted to see the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees though. We did, however, get some really yummy toasted banana bread with olive oil at Coconut’s Food Truck and ate it with a peacock.

Mile Marker 13.5: Honomanu Bay

These first few photos were taken by the road near Honomanu Bay. The bay wasn’t really where I would want to spend a full beach day, but it was very nice. It seemed like there were more local people there.

Mile Marker 19.5: Upper Waikana Falls

This waterfall is one you can easily see from the road as you drive by. I told Dave we could skip this stop, but he insisted we take a good look and I’m really glad we did. It’s definitely worth parking up the road and walking back for a fuller look.

Mile Marker 32: Black Sand Beach (Wai’anapanapa State Park)

I really wish Dave and I could have had this beach allll to ourselves. At this point I was getting pretty tired of all the other tourists, but black sand was something I’d never seen before.

We wanted to take home a souvenir similar to the dried coral we found on the beach in Aruba. So we took these two rocks from Black Sand Beach.

Red Sand Beach

I’m not sure what mile marker this one is and I think it is past Hana, but it was one of my favorite stops. I don’t think I had ever seen a red sand beach either.

Dave surprised me a few days later with two red rocks he had picked up from this beach without me knowing. That probably doesn’t seem like that much of a surprise, but he knows I’m sentimental like that so it was a really nice thing for him to do.

My absolute favorite stop of the day was the last one we did, right after the Red Sand Beach. It was an impromptu stop that we hadn’t found in any lists on the internet, but I’m saving the details for another post:)
