About ten years ago, Dave left Utah to serve an LDS mission in the Cuernavaca, Mexico mission. Eight years after completing his mission, he still talks about his experiences all the time. I can tell it had a big impact on his life. I was so stoked to go and walk the same streets, smell the same smells and visit people that he knew, taught, and even baptized. Unfortunately, much of his mission is quite dangerous right now because of Mexican drug cartels. After talking to people he knows and doing our own bit of research we were sad to find that many of the places he lived and served would be too dangerous for us to go. One place we could still visit was Acapulco (pictured above). Dave lived in Acapulco for a few months. Acapulco used to be a famous destination for Hollywood Stars in the 1950s and 1960s, but is now quite dangerous and is often listed as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Around the bay, however, is still pretty safe, but behind the mountains and just beyond the city limits, things can get sketchy. We stayed near the bay, but we did make the journey to the other side of the mountains to visit a family Dave knows. We didn’t want fear to stop us or make us miss out on cool experiences meeting back up/meeting for the first time with people Dave met in Mexico.
We were two of few tourists though… You can see here the place we stayed in with its lights on. We were some of the only people in the whole place. It was awesome, but also kinda creepy.
This is the family we visited on the other side of the mountains in Acapulco. Dave baptized the mother and Ana (standing next to me). It was very special and certainly a highlight of our trip. I’ve been learning Spanish for a while now and I was proud of myself for how much of the conversations I could understand. 
We sat on the front porch and Dave flew the drone. It was awesome to show them their neighborhood from an aerial view. 
We went with Ana to a little grocery store just down the street from their house to buy a jug of water and napkins. 
I am also proud of how well I used my Spanish to communicate with Ana and her sister (who recently had a baby) while she was putting her baby to sleep. 
The top floor here is the apartment Dave lived in during his time in Acapulco. I loved picturing him as a young missionary there. 
We spent an afternoon at the beach. I wish we could do that more often.
Dave’s not doing the greatest job at covering his farmer’s tan haha..
We went to see the famous Acapulco divers at la quebrada and got some corn to snack on. 
Behind Dave you can see the cliff they free climb and then jump off of…
Ana, Dave, and me. I love how cool people think drones are where ever we go. 
The next morning we got the pool alllll to ourselves. 
This is another family we visited. Luckily their daughter knew English so I could take a break with straining my mind sooo hard trying to understand everyone. They were so fun and kept offering to take photos of Dave and I..
Here is the last family we visited. They are recreating a photo they took nine years before. It was cool/sad to hear their stories about the earthquake that happened in Mexico a few months before. We went to dinner and afterward walked around town a little and Clara, the mother, bought us some street food. I didn’t realize that one of the things she bought us was chicken gizzard. For some reason I thought she said it was some sort of bean, I pretended to like it even though I didn’t. It wasn’t until we were driving back to our hotel when Dave told me it was chicken gizzard and I was soooo glad I didn’t know before I ate it!
We both got pretty sunburned, especially Dave, but we had such an amazing time. Probably one of the most special trips we could ever go on.
