Off the coast of Cape Town, is Robben Island. Back in the day (well, not that long ago), it was a prison island. For 18 years, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there. He was incarcerated for 27 years total before becoming the president of South Africa after apartheid. Dave listened to most of the audio book of Mandela’s autobiography before the trip and finished it when we got back. We bought a hard copy book at the gift shop on Robben Island. It will go nicely next to the Diary of Anne Frank that we bought at a gift shop at the Anne Frank House.
We took a tour of the island and the crazy part was one of our tour guides had been incarcerated there years ago. He was a political prisoner, as were most there (including Mandela). It was fascinating to get the inside scoop, but obviously very sad.
My father-in-law, Scott, loves rugby. Coincidentally, there was a World Rugby Sevens Tournament the last day we were there. I got pretty into it. It’s easy to follow because each game is only 14 minutes long. The US, Fiji, New Zealand, and South Africa all did amazing.
Lotsa walking on these, but right before a 24+ hour plane ride back.
