I am in Peru! I still can’t believe I really made this happen and I am here. I am here volunteering in Peruvian orphanages. I visited the kids for the first time yesterday and they are so unbelievably happy. They all greeted me with smiles and reached up to me to be held. I played with some of them for a while and practiced a lot of Spanish. They are the best kind of people to practice to because they just think it’s funny when I mess up. I asked a girl in Spanish what her name is and she laughed at me because I obviously didn’t say it right haha. But I surprised myself with how much Spanish I do know.
These first couple of days I have just been perusing Lima. I went to some museums, cathedrals, and malls. I also went to Plaza de Armas, which is where their president’s palace is located. We even made two of the guards laugh, but unfortunately I did not get a picture of it.
I am living in a middle class area in a Peruvian family’s house that they have graciously opened up to volunteers. There are volunteers here from all around the world.
A scary thing happened to me earlier today. I was in a taxi going back to the volunteer house with four other volunteers. Two of them lived in a different house close to mine, so the taxi driver dropped us off in the middle of our homestays. I walked home with Alyssa, a volunteer from New Zealand. I had a backpack on and (probably very stupidly) had my beloved camera around my neck. Two teenagers came up from behind me and one of them grabbed my camera and started pulling. I don’t think he realized the strap was around my neck and I wasn’t going to let him take that anywhere. The other teenager quickly ran away when he saw that they weren’t going to take my camera without a fight! But, the teenager with the hold on my camera kept pulling and pulling. Somehow I even ended up on the road and kept hanging on to it and yelling at him. Finally, he ran away. Alyssa and I were in complete shock. We did not expect that in this area. They were just punk kids, and I am glad we are okay even with a couple of scrapes and I have my camera.
So, now I enjoy these pictures even more. I fought for them!
